BHEL Secures 13,500 Cr. Contract for NTPC’s Telangana Super Thermal Power Station

NTPC Ltd. has awarded Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) an order for the Stage II expansion of Telangana Super Thermal Power Station (STPS) in Peddapalli. This order, valued at Rs. 13,500 crore, marks a significant milestone as Telangana STPS moves into its final phase.
Scope of Work Under Telangana STPS Stage – II Contract
The order for Telangana Super Thermal Power Station Stage II pertains to design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, commissioning, and testing of main package plant for 3 thermal units with 800 MW capacity each, adding a total capacity of 2400 MW.
This includes Boiler, Turbine & Generator system alongside associated civil and structural works. As per the contract, BHEL will be responsible for executing these works within 62 months from the date of award.
Telangana STPS Stage II: Focus on High Efficiency & Sustainability
Telangana Stage II units will use Ultra Super Critical Technology, that yield higher thermal efficiency, reduces coal consumption, and also lowers CO2 emissions, compared to subcritical thermal power plants. As for the fuel requirements, the plant will consume 11.70 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of coal sourced from Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).
To mitigate environmental impact, facilities such as Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) plants will be installed. The power plants are designed to maintain Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), and planned greenbelt and other such precautions will be put in place. Also, 100% of generated fly Ash will be utilized in cement manufacturing, brick production, road construction, reclamation of abandoned mines, and used as an aggregate replacement in concrete.
Total estimated cost laid out by NTPC for the development of Telangana STPS Stage II is Rs. 29,344.85 crore.
Telangana Super Thermal Power Station to Reach 4,000 MW
Stage I of Telangana STPS has 2 units with 800 MW each (1600 MW total), both of which are already operational and were commissioned in October 2023 and February 2024. Stage I project was completed at an approved cost of Rs. 10,998 crore.
Together, Stage I and Stage II will span over 738 hectares of land, and once Stage II sees completion, Telangana STPS will reach a combined capacity of 4,000 MW.
With BHEL’s contract formalized and the project entering its final stage, Telangana STPS is going to become a major contributor to the region’s power supply. Moreover, this project will also cater to the rising industrial power demand from the region.
