Rio Tinto, AMG to Explore Feasibility for Green Aluminium Plant in India
UK based Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest mining companies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) to jointly develop a low-carbon aluminium project in India. AMG M&M is promoted by the founders of Greenko Group and AM Green.
As part of the MoU, the companies will evaluate the feasibility of establishing a facility with a production capacity of 1 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of primary Aluminium and 2 MMTPA of Alumina refining. This proposed facility will be powered by wind and solar energy, and supported by pumped hydro energy storage. In the first phase of this proposed facility, the companies will evaluate the feasibility for developing 0.5 MMTPA primary Aluminium smelter at a favourable location in India.
AMG M&M will work with Greenko to design a Renewable Energy (RE) solution to ensure regular clean power supply to the aluminium project while Rio Tinto will explore sourcing and processing of alumina.
Commenting on this development, Mr. Jérôme Pécresse, CEO of Rio Tinto, said “With its rapid economic growth and strategic position, India is a compelling location for this potential project and aligns with our long-term vision for a globally more diverse and resilient aluminium business”.
