L&T Wins EPC Contract for Hindalco’s Alumina Refinery Project in Odisha

Larsen & Tourbo’s (L&T) Minerals & Metals business has secured an EPC contract for Hindalco Industries’ greenfield Alumina refinery project in Odisha.
However, L&T has not specified any construction cost for this project.
Details of Hindalco’s 850 KTPA Refinery Project
Larsen & Toubro will be constructing Hindalo’s upcoming Alumina refinery project at Kanshariguda in Raygada district of Odisha. L&T’s scope of work in this project includes Engineering, Procurement and Construction works of Hindalco’s refinery. Further, the company will also be responsible for installing necessary refining equipment at this refinery.
In the first phase of development, this project will have a capacity of 850 Kilo Tonne Per Annum (KTPA). The phase-1 of the plant is expected to be commissioned by FY-27. After being fully commissioned, Hindalco’s refinery capacity will be expanded to 3 Million Metric Tonne Per Annum (MMTPA).
This refinery project is being developed in an area of about 859.84 hectare. Hindalco’s entire refinery project will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,000 crore.
Hindalco’s Refinery to Supply Alumina to Existing Smelters
Hindalco Industries mentioned in its Q2 FY-25 investor presentation that the company’s upcoming refinery in Kanshariguda will supply Alumina to existing smelting plants. During the company’s earnings call for its Q2 FY-25 financials, Mr. Satish Pal, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, said the supply of alumina to existing smelters “….will also lead to substantial cost savings and improved margins”.
Kanshariguda to be Hindalco’s Second Refinery Project
Hindalco’s upcoming refinery in Kanshiguda will be its second refinery project in Odisha. The company already has an operational refinery project in Baphlimali, Odisha with a capacity of 1.5 MMTPA. This refinery is operated by Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries. The company’s refinery in Baphlimali supplies Alumina to Hindalco’s smelters, as well as to domestic and international markets.
