Prysmian Launches 180µm Fibre Cable for FTTx & 5G Networks

Prysmian Group, one of the manufacturers of energy and telecom cables, has announced launch of world’s first commercially available 180µm fibre cable. This cable would be marketed under the brand name ‘Sirocco Extreme microduct cable’.

Basic Features of the New Sirocco Extreme Microduct Cable

Prysmian’s Sirocco Extreme cable has 288 fibres in a diameter of 6.5mm. According to the press release from the company this is a world record diameter and fibre density for microduct optial fibre cable of 288 fibres. Cable has a fibre density of 8.7 fibres per mm2.

Speaking on the occasion Ian Griffiths, Director R&D Telecom Business at Prysmian Group said “Designed for installation into microducts, they (Sirocco Extreme microduct cables) are perfectly fit for blowing in high density access, FTTx (Fiber To The x) and 5G networks and offer a scalable solution that’s high-density, physically compact, and easily deployable for a future-fit solution”.

Benefits of Compact Size of the Optical Fibre Cable

Sirocco Extreme cable is currently available in a fibre count of 288 with further fibre counts to be available later in the year. Due to large fibre count and reduced diameter installation of these cables is faster.

It is possible to install this 288 fibre cable into an 8mm ID (Internal Diameter) duct. Earlier 8 mm duct could only install up to 192 fibres. Prysmian stated that these cables meet international standards for optical and mechanical performance.

The smaller size makes it possible to install more fibres into congested duct space and enables the use of smaller ducts for new installations. This results in lower installation costs and use of lesser raw materials.
