Micron’s USD 2.75 Bn Semiconductor Fabrication Plant in Gujarat Inaugurated

Micron Technology, Inc. inaugurated its first semiconductor Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging in Sanand, Gujarat, on 28th February 2026. A combined investment of around USD 2.75 billion by Micron and Government partners was used to build this semiconductor manufacturing facility in India.
Sanand site has begun commercial production, and to mark its opening, Micron presented its first shipment of made-in-India memory modules to Dell Technologies for laptops which are made in India. Furthermore, this state-of-the-art-facility will use its features to meet customer demands for memory and storage driven by AI.
Features of India’s First Semiconductor Fabrication Facility
Speaking of Micron’s semiconductor ATMP facility, it converts advanced Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NOT AND (NAND) semiconductor wafers into finished memory and storage products. These products are used in smartphones, servers, and personal computers, among others.
Additionally, this semiconductor facility, when fully ramped, will feature more than 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space. This cleanroom space is critical for semiconductor assembly and testing as it needs a sterile environment needed to package delicate circuits.
Coming to environmental impact of this facility, this plant is designed for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standards of the Green Building Council. Also, Sanand facility boasts a Zero Liquid Discharge system, i.e., not a single drop of wastewater will be discharged into the grounds or rivers, making it environmentally sustainable.
Brief Background on Micron’s Sanand Semiconductor ATMP Facility
Micron’s Sanand semiconductor ATMP facility was the first proposal approved under India Semiconductor Mission (IMS) and had its ground-breaking ceremony in September 2023. Construction for this facility was commenced soon following its approval, with a total outlay of Rs. 22,500 crore. Also, Tata Projects Ltd. (TPL) played a pivotal role in the construction of this facility.
Assembly & Test of Semiconductors to Scale-Up in Hundreds of Millions by 2027
Now that the facility has commenced operations, it is expected to assemble and test tens of millions of semiconductors in 2026, which will increase to hundreds of millions in 2027. In its press release, Micron stated,“The expansion of conventional assembly and test operations in India complements Micron’s planned development of advanced manufacturing and packaging capabilities in the United States and strengthens the company’s global assembly and test network.”
Expressing his views on this development, Mr. Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Micron Technology, said, “This pioneering facility, the first assembly and test site of its kind in the country, helps build a resilient ecosystem that underpins the global AI economy.”
About Amicron Technology: Micron Technology, Inc. was founded in 1978 and is based in Boise, Idaho. The American manufacturer deals in memory and storage solutions, which includes DRAM, NAND, and NOR flash.
