Tata Projects Ltd. (TPL), the EPC arm of the Tata Group, will be constructing Micron Technology’s upcoming Semiconductor facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This information was shared by TPL in a press release dated 23rd September 2023.

Micron Tech’s USD 2.75 Bn. Facility to Comprise Semiconductor Assembly & Test Plant

Micron Technology’s upcoming facility will be developed at a cost of about USD 2.75 billion (approximately Rs. 22,888.60 crore) and will comprise a semiconductor assembly and test plant. This facility will be developed at the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation area of Chaarodi, Sanand, and will span over 93 acres.

Further, Tata Projects stated that phase 1 of Micron Technology’s upcoming facility will be complete by the end of 2024. This will entail the development of 5 lakh sq. ft. of cleanroom space. Earlier, in June, Micron Technology had stated that it expects work on phase 2 of the project to commence in the second half of the present decade, that is, post 2025.

Speaking about this collaboration, Mr. Vinayak Pai, MD & CEO, Tata Projects said, “We are thrilled to embark on this significant journey with Micron Technology, an industry leader in innovative memory and storage solutions. This collaboration exemplifies the unwavering commitment of Tata Projects to advancing technology, promoting sustainable development, and contributing considerably to ‘Make in India’ initiative“.

‘First of its kind’ DRAM, NAND Assembly & Test Facility in India

Tata Projects stated that Micron Technology’s upcoming facility will feature a ‘first of its kind’ DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and NAND (NOT AND)* assembly and test facility in India. TPL will provide EPC services for this project by employing technologies such as 4D BIM (Building Information Modeling) and hybrid modular accelerated construction.

*NAND is a logical circuit that takes Boolean input to generate a Boolean output. It is a combination of NOT and AND gates, and is used typically in flash memory systems in the form of Electronically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM). NAND Memory is typically used to upload read-only files in USB flash drives.

Micron’s Facility to be Environmentally Sustainable, Minimise Water Usage

Micron’s upcoming plant will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standards of the Green Building Council. The facility will be efficient in terms of water usage, and have a Zero Liquid Discharge system, which prevents the discharge of industrial wastewater into the environment.

Brief Background of Micron Tech’s Upcoming Semiconductor Plant

Micron Technology announced its plans to develop the aforementioned facility in its press release dated 22nd June 2023. Out of the total project cost, Micron will be investing USD 825 million (about Rs. 6,865 crore), which is 30% of the total cost of development. The project had been approved under the Government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing which includes development of Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) units. As per this scheme, 50% of the project cost would be given by the Central Government, while 20% would be given by the Gujarat government.
