BHEL Secures Two Major Thermal Power Orders in MP

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured two Thermal power orders collectively valued between Rs. 13,000 crore and Rs. 15,000 crore from Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL). The company has also received the Notification of Award (NoA) for these orders.

BHEL to Develop Amarkantak and Satpura Supercritical Thermal Power Plants

BHEL has received the aforementioned orders for the Amarkantak and Satpura Supercritical Thermal Power Plants (STPPs) located in Madhya Pradesh. These projects will be executed on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis.

Project Details and Scope of Work

Scope of work at the Amarkantak Thermal Power Project includes setting up a 660 MW Thermal power unit, which will be designated as Unit No. 6 at the power plant. Similarly, at the Satpura Thermal Power Plant, BHEL will construct a 660 MW thermal power unit, identified as Unit No. 12 at the plant. Along with the construction of these thermal units, Bharat Heavy Electricals will also be responsible for the supply of necessary equipment, as well as the erection and commissioning of both power units.

Each project is expected to be completed within a period of 57 months from the date of receipt of the Notification of Award (NoA), which was officially issued to the company on 29th September 2025. Thus, these projects are expected to be completed by June-end, 2030.

India’s Heavy Reliance on Thermal Power Continues

Thermal power sector in India continues to dominate power generation of the country. Despite India’s commitment towards expanding its Renewable Energy power plants, the bulk of the country’s power requirements are fulfilled by coal-based TPPs. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release dated 22nd June 2025, Thermal power accounts for 50.52% of India’s total installed energy capacity. Collectively, India’s thermal power installations represent a power generation capacity of 240 GW.

BHEL’s Role in Strengthening India’s Power Infrastructure

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has executed numerous projects across the country. Some of its developments include Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Project in Madhya Pradesh, Unchahar Thermal Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh, Raipur Supercritical Thermal Power Plant in Chhattisgarh, and Mirzapur Supercritical Thermal Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh.

As of 31st March 2025, BHEL reported a total order book value of Rs. 1,96,328 crore. Out of this, the power segment accounted for Rs. 1,57,922 crore, representing nearly 80% of the total order book. The industry segment contributed Rs. 34,826 crore.
