BHEL Secures Thermal Plant Contracts from Adani Worth Over 11,000 Cr.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) has secured orders from Adani Power Ltd. and its subsidiary, Mahan Energen Ltd. (MEL), to build three supercritical* thermal plants. These plants will be built in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

This information was conveyed by BHEL in a stock filing dated 26th August 2024.

*Supercritical thermal plants operate with steam which is over the critical temperature and critical pressure of water. Such plants operate at a higher efficiency (over 40%) as compared to traditional coal-based plants (efficiency of about 33%).

Two Plants in Rajasthan for Adani Power, One Plant in MP for Mahan Energen

Out of the aforementioned three thermal power plants, two will come up in Kawai, Rajasthan for Adani Power Ltd., while one will be developed in Mahan, Madhya Pradesh for Mahan Energen.

Kawai Phase-2 and Phase-3 to be Developed for Adani Power

In Kawai, Adani Power already operates a supercritical 2×660 MW coal-based power plant (Kawai Phase-1). BHEL has secured orders for building Kawai Phase-2 and Kawai Phase-3 for Adani Power, and each of these phases will have two units of 800 MW each.

Kawai Phase-2 and Phase-3 have a specified completion of 49 months (4 years and 1 month) and 52 months (4 years and 4 months) respectively, as per BHEL’s release.

Mahan Phase-3 Thermal Project to be Built for Mahan Energen

BHEL has secured the contract to develop Phase-3 of Mahan Thermal Power Project in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh from Mahan Energen Ltd. BHEL will establish two supercritical thermal power units of 800 MW each as per this contract. BHEL mentioned that this order is expected to be executed in a period of 55 months (4 years and 7 months).

Mahan Thermal Plant’s Phase-1 comprises two functional units of 600 MW each, while its Phase-2 comprising two units of 800 MW each is currently under construction, and is expected to be complete by June, 2027.

BHEL’s Scope of Work in Secured Orders

BHEL will be engaged in the supply and installation of boilers, turbines, generators, and associated equipment for the aforementioned projects. Apart from this, BHEL’s scope of work includes supervision of ‘erection and commissioning’ of these thermal power plants.

Some Other Major Orders Secured by BHEL

Other sizeable orders secured by BHEL in CY-2024 include a Rs. 15,000 crore order from Neyveli Lignite Corp. (NLC India) for its Talabira Thermal Plant, a Rs. 5,500 crore order from Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (HPGCL), and a Rs. 9,500 crore order from NTPC to develop a thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, in June 2024, BHEL also secured two orders valued at Rs. 3,500 crore from Adani to develop thermal power plants in Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh.
