TARIL Wins ‘Large’ Transformer Order, Enters Nuclear Power Sector
Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL), a manufacturer of transformers and reactors, has entered the nuclear power sector after securing a new order from Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL).
The order falls under TARIL’s ‘Large’ order category, which includes orders valued between Rs. 100 crore and Rs. 500 crore.
Work Scope of TARIL’s New Nuclear Power Order
The order involves supplying generator transformers for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s (NPCIL) Kaiga Units 5 and 6 nuclear power project in Karnataka. These two units will comprise indigenous 700 MWe (Megawatt-Electrical) Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) being developed by NPCIL.
Commenting on the order, Mr. Satyen Mamtora, Managing Director & CEO of Transformers and Rectifiers (India), said, “This order is also a strong validation of the trust placed in TARIL’s technology, engineering capabilities and ability to deliver equipment for highly critical power applications. As India advances towards its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, strengthening indigenous capabilities and building a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem will be critical”.
The company is expected to execute this order within a period of 35 months. TARIL mentioned in its stock exchange filing that its entry into the nuclear power sector will enable the company to leverage its expertise in transformer manufacturing to support the growing requirements of power generation and transmission infrastructure.
Details of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Project
The Kaiga Generating Station is an operational nuclear power plant located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. In April 2025, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) secured a contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the construction of two nuclear power units at the Kaiga Atomic Power Station. Valued at approximately Rs. 12,800 crore, the project marked MEIL’s entry into India’s nuclear power sector.
Under the project, MEIL will be responsible for constructing two 700 MW nuclear reactors at Kaiga Units 5 and 6. The two reactors will collectively add 1,400 MW of nuclear power generation capacity to the Kaiga site.
Significance of TARIL’s Entry into the Nuclear Power Sector
The supply of critical transformer equipment for nuclear power projects has largely been handled by a limited number of established players, including Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). TARIL’s entry into this segment allows the company to become part of India’s growing nuclear power equipment supply chain.
India is currently expanding its nuclear power capacity, with several projects based on indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) planned across the country. The Kaiga Units 5 and 6 order gives TARIL its first reference in the nuclear power sector and could help the company qualify for transformer orders in other upcoming nuclear projects.
