Toray Industries to Establish India’s First PPS Resin Facility

Toray Industries (India) Private Limited, a high-engineering thermoplastics manufacturer, is going to build a new production facility at its site in Andhra Pradesh. The in-house production line will manufacture company’s trademark product, “TORELINATM, a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin compound.

Notably, the upcoming facility will mark India’s first production line for PPS resin compound.

The facility will boast a capacity of 3,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (TPA).

Features of Toray Industries’ PPS Resin Compound-TORELINATM

Key characteristics and properties exhibited by TORELINATM include:
Thermal Resistance: Can withstand temperatures ranging between 200°C and 240°C
Chemical Resistance: Offers resistance to chemical substances such as acids, alkalis, and organic solvents.
Flame Retardancy: The product (PPS) naturally resists combustion.
Electrical Properties: Exhibits insulating properties and electrical resistance even when exposed to high-temperature and high-humidity environments.
Dimensional Stability: Retains shape at high temperature and high humidity due to minimal moisture absorption
Mechanical Strength & Rigidity: Maintains structural strength and rigidity with minimal loss in characteristics even at high temperatures

PPS resin is typically compounded with glass fiber or mineral fibers to increase its strength. As Toray engages in total production from base polymers to compounds, the company offers a wide variety of material grades.

This PPS resin facility is expected to commence operations in early 2027, with commercial sample distribution to start by April 2027.

Toray Expanding its Footprint in India

Toray Industries (India) is a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Toray Industries, Inc. The company’s site in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh already manufactures nylon and polybutylene terephthalate resin compounds.

Once this PPS resin facility starts operations, it will expand Toray’s range of engineering plastics for automotive electrical components and engine parts. This product has a wide range of applications in automotive and Electrical and Electronic (E&E) components.

Rationale Behind Toray Industries’ Upcoming Production Line

According to Toray Industries, the company’s decision to establish a new PPS resin compound facility was linked to Indian government initiatives, such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which supports local manufacturing.

The company further added, Demand in India is robust for locally manufacturing and sourcing resin materials... demand is surging for switching from imported materials to locally made alternatives.
