Tata Steel Inaugurates its First Scrap-Based Electric Arc Furnace in Ludhiana
Tata Steel Ltd. has recently inaugurated its first scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at Hi-Tech Valley, Ludhiana. An investment of Rs. 3,200 crore went into this plant’s development with an aim to reduce carbon emissions that occur from the traditionally used blast furnace method for low-carbon steelmaking.
As per Tata Steel’s press release, this EAF has a capacity to emit less than 0.3 tonne of CO2 per tonne of steel. Further, the EAF will house a capacity of 0.75 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). To produce low-carbon steel, the facility will use steel scrap as a raw material, off which 40% will be accounted from the company’s steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana.
The newly inaugurated Ludhiana EAF will yield construction-grade steel rebar under Tata Steel’s retail brand ‘Tata Tiscon’. As for the power source, the facility will be powered via 50% of renewable energy, taking a step further in nation’s clean energy goals.
Commenting on this development, Mr. T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel, said, “The Ludhiana EAF marks a defining milestone in Tata Steel’s journey towards achieving Net Zero by 2045”.
