Waaree Energies Completes Groundbreaking of 10 GW Ingot-Wafer Facility

Waaree Energies Limited recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its solar ingot and wafer manufacturing plant at Butibori, Nagpur, in Maharashtra. Development of the said facility will be done across 300 acres of land with an investment of approximately Rs. 6,200 crore.
Waaree Creating Its Own Supply Chain- Upscaling Upstream Operations
The company’s new facility’s main focus will be to produce high-purity solar ingots and wafers, which are further processed into solar modules. This plant will feature a capacity of 10 GW each for ingots and wafers.
Addition of this facility will mark an important step for Waaree as it will strengthen the company’s upstream operations by creating its own ingot-wafer supply chain for solar modules. Though India is making strides towards its energy transition goals, where solar energy plays a major part, solar ingots and wafers are still being heavily imported, making it critical to increase the capacity of ingots and wafers in India.
India’s Ingot-Wafer Supply Chain Lags Behind?
India has witnessed a significant surge in the manufacturing capacity of solar modules and solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. The country’s solar module capacity increased from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March 2025, while solar cell capacity rose from 9 GW to 25 GW during the same period.
Despite the surge in solar module capacity, India relied entirely on imports for solar ingots and wafers before FY25, which form the base of solar modules. But now the country has an ingot and wafer manufacturing capacity of 2 GW, following the commissioning of Adani Solar’s facility in FY25; this plant is the nation’s first ingot and wafer manufacturing plant. India’s dependence on imported Solar ingot and wafer is expected to decrease with the establishment of new plants similar to Waaree Energies’ 10 GW solar ingot and wafer plant.
Waaree’s Plant to Support India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision
Considering the above facts, addition of Waaree’s 10 GW facility will be significant in achieving nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Vision by promoting domestic manufacturing and also increasing energy security. Moreover, the company stated that once this facility becomes operational, it will bring over 8,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Speaking on this recent development, Mr. Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director, Waaree Energies Ltd., said, “Nagpur’s strategic location, strong industrial ecosystem, and connectivity across India make it an ideal destination for a project of this scale.”
