PGCIL Starts Award of Khavda Phase-V Part A HVDC Project Packages

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (PGCIL or POWERGRID), is developing the Khavda-V A High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project. PGCIL has begun awarding EPC project packages for this project, and has already awarded 2 packages out of the total 12.

POWERGRID’s Rs. 25,000 Cr. Khavda Phase V Part A HVDC Project

Part A of Khavda Phase V transmission scheme is being developed at a total estimated cost of Rs. 24,819 crore. In November 2024, POWERGRID acquired Khavda V-A Power Transmission Ltd., the executing SPV for this project from REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd. through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB).

This project targets evacuation of Renewable Energy (RE) from Phase V – part A of the under-development Khavda RE park.

Scope of Work Under Khavda Phase V Part A HVDC Project

Aforementioned project involves setting up two 6 GW, 800 KV HVDC terminal stations, one at at KPS2 (Khavda Pooling Station 2), Gujarat and the other at Nagpur, Maharashtra. An HVDC link, about 1,200 Km in length, will be established between these two pooling stations through Gujarat and Maharashtra. Apart from this, the project also entails establishment of a Line In Line Out (LILO) connection at Nagpur to the 765 KV Double circuit line from Wardha to Raipur.

Two Packages under KPS2 – Nagpur HVDC Link Awarded

Works Under Package 1 Awarded to Jyoti Structures

Mumbai-based Jyoti Structures Ltd. has secured works under package 1 of the Khavda-V part A HVDC transmission project.

The value of this order is about Rs. 741.28 crore, and it entails designing, testing and supplying towers and conductor for the length under package 1 of the project. Moreover, soil survey, laying of foundation for the towers, their erection, stringing of the conductor, and subsequent testing and commissioning falls under the scope of work for Jyoti Structures. However, the length of HVDC line covered under package 1 was not revealed by Jyoti Structures.

The company will be executing the aforementioned works within 42 months from the award of order. Therefore, these works are expected to be completed by the end of June, 2028.

KEC International to Develop 140 Km of HVDC Link

KEC International has secured the order to work on a 140 Km-section of the KPS2-Nagpur HVDC link. However, no further details as to the name of the package, value, or scope of work in this order have been disclosed.
