Tata Power-DDL Commissions India’s First Submersible Distribution Substation
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd., a joint venture between Govt. Of NCT of Delhi and Tata Power has commissioned a submersible power substation in Gujranwala Town, New Delhi.
Tata Power-DDL in its release said that this is the first-of-its-kind submersible distribution transformer installation in India.
Submersible Transformer Substation Developed and Manufactured in India
Tata Power-DDL informed that the submersible substation has been supplied by Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. and also provided technical assistance in its installation. The company also said that the submersible transformer substation has been fully developed in India.

The substation has a 630KVA submersible transformer installed under the parking space of Tata Power-DDL Gujaranwala building. The substation will as of now be working as backup during emergency for providing continuous and reliable power to key consumers in area including consumers providing essential services.
The submersible substation was inaugurated by Dr. A K Ambasht, Member, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) in the presence of Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan, CEO, Tata Power-DDL.
Speaking on the installation, Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan said “As a utility of the future, we are constantly focused at innovating and becoming future ready. This utility installation of submersible power station will not only further strengthen our network but also ensure reliable power supply to our consumers in all times”.
Submersible Transformers: A Reliable Solution for Water Prone Areas
Submersible transformers can even function upon complete submersion under water which could be an ideal solution for emergency situations in coastal areas where storm, flood etc. disrupt the power supply frequently.
Submersible transformer can also be helpful in a metro city’s space crunch due to rapid urbanisation. These can be easily installed under the multi-lane main roads, service roads, public parks, building parking, basements, and public parking places. This leaves much space on top surface for general purpose use like walk ways, roads, parks etc.
Toshiba’s Submersible Substation equipped with Sensors and Special Relays
Toshiba manufactured submersible substation is completely sealed to be waterproof and the transformer is equipped with temperature and pressure sensors for monitoring and planning maintenance activities. The transformer gets 11KV supply for transformer through ring main unit (RMU) having special relay which controls the switching and automatic tripping under abnormal network conditions. This makes it low maintenance and capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions.
