Ohmium Inaugurates 2,000 Cr. Bengaluru Electrolyser Gigafactory

Ohmium International has inaugurated a Rs. 2,000 crore gigafactory in the outskirts of Bengaluru, Karnataka, in Doddaballapur. The current production capacity of the gigafactory is of 500MW.
According to a press release dated 19th July 2024, the gigafactory will manufacture Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers.
Ohmium’s 500 MW Electrolyser Gigafactory to be Expanded to 2 GW
At Ohmium’s gigafctory inauguration, Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, Mr. MB Patil mentioned that the factory’s current capacity to roll out 500 MW of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers will be increased to 2 GW in a phased manner. Although, the timeline for this expanison was not specified.
Ohmium’s website adds that if required, the installed manufacturing capacity of this plant can further be ramped up to 4 GW from 2 GW within two years.
Ohmium has clarified on its website that the electrolysers produced at its Bengaluru gigafactory will comprise at least 80% domestically sourced components.
Ohmium Gigafactory to perform End-to-End Functions
Ohmium’s ISO:9001 gigafactory, sprawling over 14,000 square meter, will perform end-to-end functions. This entails manufacturing and assembling electrolyser systems, followed by testing and requisite quality checks. The gigafactory will also have warehousing facilities along with shipping provisions for the produced electrolysers.
Commenting on the inauguration of this gigafactory, Mr. Arne Ballantine, Ohmium CEO, said, “The ribbon cutting at our new gigafactory marks a major milestone for Ohmium and enables us to deliver green hydrogen solutions to our growing pipeline of customers across India and around the world”. Mr. Ballantine added that Ohmium’s 2 GW electrolyser gigafactory (after further expansion) can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 million tonne per annum.
To this, Mr. Ashwin Varma, Ohmium COO, added that Ohmium’s modular PEM electrolysers have been designed for easy assembling and mass production. He also said that production at the newly-inaugurated gigafactory can be scaled up quickly to meet any growth in demand “with additional cost savings as capacity expands”.
Ohmium’s Plant to Lower Green Hydrogen Cost
The cost of green hydrogen in India at present is approximately ₹300-320 per Kg. India’s price target per Kg for Green Hydrogen is ₹160-170 by 2030. Increased domestic electrolyser manufacturing by companies like Ohmium International can help reduce the cost of generation of Green Hydrogen. Moreover, Ohmium’s gigafactory will help cater to the increasing domestic demand for electrolysers.
A 2022 study by NITI Aayog and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) projects that India’s domestic electrolyser demand could reach 20 GW by 2030 and 226 GW by 2050. The report also estimates the Indian market size for electrolysers to reach USD 31 billion by 2050.
Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme incentivises electrolyser manufacturing and Green Hydrogen production under National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). This programme has been allocated ₹17,490 crore by the Union Government until 2029-30.
About Ohmium International: Headquartered in USA, Ohmium International develops Green Hydrogen solutions. It has a project pipeline of over 2 GW globally. In India the company functions through its subsidiary, Ohmium India Pvt. Ltd., with its corporate office in Bengaluru.
