Jindal Steel to Double Raigarh Plant Structural Steel Capacity by Mid 2028

Jindal Steel Ltd., formerly known as Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), is going to double its Raigarh steel manufacturing plant’s structural steel capacity from 1.2 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) to 2.4 MMTPA. This expansion is expected to be completed by mid-2028. This information was made available via the company’s stock filing dated 29th December, 2025.
Jindal Steel’s Raigarh facility is known as world’s largest coal-based sponge iron, i.e., Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) producer. Along with a significant capacity for DRI and steel, the facility also has its own captive power plant.
Jindal Steel to Satiate Growing Demands for Heavy Structural Steel

Jindal Steel will set up a new structural steel mill as part of the said expansion, which will enable the facility to manufacture parallel flange sections with 1,100 mm in depth and 1,500 Kg/m in weight. Currently, the company manufactures parallel flange sections that range from 100 mm to 900 mm in depth and up to 333 Kg/m in weight.
This will help cater to growing demands for heavy structural steel sections arising from infrastructure, refinery, power, renewable energy, transmission, and high-rise construction projects, and also curb India’s dependence on imports for heavy structural steel sections.
Jindal Steel’s Expansion Plan to Reduce India’s Import Dependency
While India is the world’s second-largest steel producer, the nation still depends on imports for finished steel. As per PIB’s press release, dated 4th April 2025, India in 2023-2024 imported 8.32 Million Tonnes (MT) of finished steel. Out of which, 2.68 MT were imported from China and 2.67 MT from Korea, among others.
As Jindal Steel is increasing its capacity for structural steel, India’s reliance on imports for structural steel will be reduced, making the nation more self-reliant.
