Hitachi Rail Consortium Wins Rs. 1,620 Cr. Chennai Metro Order

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) stated in a press release dated 6th December 2022 that a consortium of Hitachi Rail STS SpA and Hitachi Rail STS India Pvt. Ltd. has been awarded a Rs.1,620 crore contract for signalling, train control and video management system for Chennai Metro’s Phase 2.

Scope of work as per the contract entails the design, manufacture, supply and installation of this Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which will facilitate Automatic Train Operation (ATO). With the help of this system, metro trains can be run without the need for a driver.

The trains will be able to operate with a minimum time gap of 90 seconds, and this system provides centralised real-time monitoring and control for metro train operations. Hitachi Rail will also carry out the ensuing testing and commissioning operations for the same.
