The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 5(A) of the Delhi Metro project, with a total investment of Rs. 12,014.91 crore. As part of this expansion, three new metro corridors have been approved under Phase V to further strengthen urban transport connectivity in the National Capital Region.

Overview of Phase 5(A) Delhi Metro Rail Expansion

The aforementioned approved expansion comprises three new corridors with a combined length of 16 Km and a total of 13 stations. Of these, 10 stations will be underground, while three will be elevated. The corridors included in Phase 5(A) are RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha corridor, the Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj corridor, and the Aerocity–IGI Airport Terminal 1 corridor.

Details of RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha Metro Corridor

The RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha corridor will be the longest among the three, covering a length of 9.9 Km with nine stations. The stations planned on this corridor are RK Ashram Marg, Shivaji Stadium, Central Secretariat, Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial–High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam, and Indraprastha.

This corridor will be an extension of the Botanical Garden–RK Ashram Marg line and will provide metro connectivity to the Central Vista area, which is currently under redevelopment. Upon completion, it is expected to significantly improve access to key administrative and cultural zones in central Delhi.

Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj: New Interchange Linking Violet and Magenta Lines

The Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj corridor will span 3.9 Km and include three stations at Sarita Vihar Depot, Madanpur Khadar, and Kalindi Kunj. This extension will provide an interchange at Kalindi Kunj with the existing Magenta Line, enabling a direct link between the Violet and Magenta lines. The corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Noida, Faridabad, and various parts of Delhi, easing travel across the southern and southeastern regions of the capital.

Seamless Airport Travel via Aerocity–IGI Terminal 1 Metro Link

The Aerocity–IGI Airport Terminal 1 corridor will be 2.263 Km long and will function as a direct extension with no intermediate stations between the two terminal points. Once operational, this corridor will provide a seamless metro connection between airport terminals, eliminating the need for shuttle buses or multiple interchanges.

Delhi Metro Project Phase V Timeline and Network Expansion

All three new corridors under Phase 5(A) are expected to be completed within three years. With the addition of these corridors, Delhi Metro’s network will exceed 400 Km, strengthening its position among the world’s largest rapid transit systems.

Phase 5(A) is part of a broader effort to enhance Delhi’s rapid transit infrastructure, alongside the ongoing construction of Phase IV corridors.

Status of Delhi Metro Phase IV Construction

Phase IV of the Delhi Metro comprises 111 Km of corridors with 83 stations. Civil construction work for Phase IV is currently underway, with approximately 80.43% of the work completed. The Phase IV corridors are expected to be commissioned in stages by December 2026.

Delhi Metro currently caters to an average of 65 lakh passenger journeys per day. The highest ridership recorded so far stands at 81.87 lakh passenger journeys on 8 August 2025.
