NTPC, SJVN, THDC to develop Pumped Storage Projects in Chhattisgarh
SJVN Limited, NTPC Limited and THDC India Limited have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for developing Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) in Chhattisgarh.
SJVN Signs MoU to Develop 1,800 MW PSP in Chhattisgarh

SJVN will be investing Rs. 9,500 crore for developing 1,800 MW PSP at Kotpali in Balrampur District of Chhattisgarh. The company has signed an MoU with the Chhattisgarh government and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (Chhattisgarh GENCO) for this project.
SJVN’s PSP in Chhattisgarh will be developed as off-stream* closed-loop system**. This project is expected to generate about 3,967 Million Units (MUs) of energy.
*In pumped storage projects, off-stream refers to facilities that utilize separate reservoirs rather than being directly connected to a river or natural water source.
**Closed loop systems in PSP involve the recirculation of water between an upper and a lower reservoir, with no reliance on external water sources.
This project is expected to create job opportunities for about 5,000 people during its construction and development phase.
However, SJVN did not specify completion period of this project.
NTPC to Invest Rs. 5,876 Cr. for 1,200 MW PSP in Chhattisgarh

Apart from SJVN’s MoU with Chhattisgarh government, NTPC Limited has also signed an MoU with Chhattisgarh GENCO for developing 1,200 MW PSP at Sikaser in Gariyaband district of the state. The company will be investing Rs. 5,876 crore for setting up this pumped storage project.
However, NTPC has not specified any completion period of its upcoming PSP in Chhatisgarh.
THDC India’s 1,400 MW PSP to Come up in Jashpur District of Chhattisgarh

THDC India has signed an MoU with Chhattisgarh GENCO and government of Chhattisgarh for the development of a 1,400 MW pump storage based hydro-electric power project at Dangari in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh.
However, the company has not specified any details regarding completion period and financial cost of this project.
Commenting on the partnership between Chhattisgarh government of THDC India, Mr. R K Vishnoi, MD of THDC India said “This strategic partnership is a significant step towards strengthening renewable energy infrastructure in the state, enhancing grid stability, and supporting India’s clean energy transition”.
Upcoming Pumped Storage Projects in Chhattisgarh
It is notable that Chhattisgarh currently has no operational pumped storage projects. The PSPs being developed by SJVN, NTPC and THDC will mark the first such projects in the state. In addition to these projects, the state government has also identified several other potential sites for future PSP development. These include locations near Rouni village in Jashpur district, and near Hasdeo Bango in Korba district of Chattisgarh.
