STL and Hygenco Partner to Use Green H2 in Glass Preform Production
Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) has partnered with Hygenco Green Energies Pvt. Ltd. for using Green Hydrogen in glass preform* production. Hygenco’s recently inaugurated facility will supply Green Hydrogen and Oxygen to STL’s glass preform plant, both of which are located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. This collaboration between the two companies has been dubbed as Project Photon Leap.
*Glass preforms are used for manufacturing optical fibre.
Under this collaboration, Hygenco will operate its Green Hydrogen plant and supply Green Hydrogen and Oxygen to STL under a 20-year agreement. The supplied Green H2 and Oxygen will be used as blast furnace fuel in STL’s glass preform plant, thereby replacing the use of natural gas. Through this arrangement, STL anticipates to reduce its carbon emissions by about 30% annually. The move also aligns with STL’s target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Commenting on this development, Mr. Rahul Puri, CEO – Optical Networking Business, STL said, “By leveraging 100% Green Hydrogen for its glass preform manufacturing, STL is setting a new global benchmark for decarbonization in the optical fibre industry”.
