Southern Railways Approves Chennai MRTS Handover to Chennai Metro
Southern Railways approved the handing over of Chennai’s Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) during a meeting held on 11th May 2022. The meeting was chaired by Mr V. Irai Anbu, the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai MRTS connects the central business area of old Madras with the IT corridor and has a potential capacity of 4,25,000 passengers a day. This System is 15 Km in length and has 18 stations which connect important landmarks in the city. After the completion of ongoing Phase II extension of the Chennai MRTS three more stations viz. Puzhudhivakkam, Adambakkam and St Thomas Mount will be added, and this will link Chennai Metro to the city’s suburban rail network.
