MoD Signs Rs 1,075 Cr Contract with BEL to Upgrade 957 T-90 Tanks
Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) on 24th February, 2022, for upgradation of Commander sight in 957 T-90 Army Tanks. Commander sight is an optical observation device on a tank.
Presently these tanks are fitted with Image Converter (IC) tube-based sight for night vision. The new Mid Wave Thermal Image (MWIR) based sight, which is to replace IC tube-based sight, has been jointly developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and BEL according to specifications given by the Indian Army.
The indigenously developed MWIR based sight can detect targets upto a distance of 8Km during day and night, and a Laser Range Finder (LRF) to find ranges accurately up to 5Km. Corrections from ballistic software and LRF will enhance the accuracy of Commander sight on the T-90 tanks.
