MNRE Sets Carbon Emissions Limit to Define ‘Green Hydrogen’

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a Carbon emissions limit for Indian Green Hydrogen manufacturers, which must be fulfilled to consider the Hydrogen produced as ‘Green’. As per this definition, Carbon emissions should not be more than 2 Kg of Carbon dioxide equivalent per Kg of Hydrogen produced.

MNRE stated in a PIB release dated 19th August 2023, that both electrolysis-based and biomass-based production methods of producing hydrogen are included in the definition.

Earlier, in January 2023, union cabinet had approved an amount of Rs. 19,744 crore for the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
