L&T Secures 10,000-15,000 Cr. ‘Bullet Train’ Electrification System Works Package

Larsen & Toubro Construction has secured a ‘mega’* order for the electrification works on package EW1 of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project (MAHSRP), colloquially referred to as ‘Bullet Train Project’.

L&T shared this information in its press release dated 16th January 2024.

*As per L&T’s order classification, a ‘mega’ order has a value ranging from Rs. 10,000 crore to Rs. 15,000 crore.

Electrification System Works to be Executed on 508 RKm

L&T Construction has secured the order to execute electrification system works for the entire 508 Route Km (Rkm) of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor from an ‘authorised Japanese agency’ acting on behalf of the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL). The identity of this Japanese agency was not disclosed in the company’s press release.

L&T Construction’s Scope of Work

L&T Construction’s scope of work in this order comprises the design, manufacture, and supply, followed by installation, testing, and eventually commissioning of the electrification system works for package EW1 of the MAHSRP.

These works include 2×25 KV overhead electrification lines specifically for high-speed rail, traction substations, and associated MV/LV power distribution equipment.

L&T has clarified that these works will be executed on a Design-Build Lump Sum Price basis.

Japanese Shinkansen Technology to be Used, to Enable Speeds up to 320 Kmph

Shinkansen refers to the set of technologies conducive to high train speeds, which were developed specifically for Japan’s bullet trains.

L&T will employ the Japanese Shinkansen approach to electrify package EW1 of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad ‘Bullet Train’ Project, which will facilitate train speeds of up to 320 Kmph. L&T’s release highlighted that the project will employ heavy compound catenary system and change-over switches amongst other technologies borrowed from the Shinkansen approach.

Mr. Rajeev Jyoti, Advisor to Chairman & Managing Director for L&T’s Railways Business, said that the EW1 package of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad ‘Bullet Train’ Project is the single largest railway electrification project order to be ever placed in India. “The experience & technology transfer from this project shall help L&T in developing credentials for such future High-Speed Rail projects in India and abroad”, he added.

L&T has won major orders for the MAHSRP, some of which include a Rs. 24,000 crore civil works contract secured in December 2020, ballastless track works package (package T3), and order for the development of Sabarmati Depot (MAHSR D-2).

L&T is currently executing several Civil Viaduct, Station Packages, Track & Depot Packages and Special Steel Bridges Packages for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project”, mentions L&T’s release.
