Indian Railways will be investing around Rs 130 crore to enhance manufacturing capacity at its Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, to roll out six Vande Bharat rakes per week from the current four.
ICF’s capacity enhancement will enable Indian Railways to meet the target of rolling out 75 Vande Bharat trains by August 2023. This information was given by Union Railway Minister, Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw after he visited the ICF on 20th May 2022. He added that two prototype second-generation Vande Bharat trains will be ready by August 2022.
Besides this Rs 130 crore investment, the Indian Railways has also planned to set up 14 maintenance depots for Vande Bharat trains. These depots will come up at stations along 28 possible routes of Shatabdi and Intercity where Vande Bharat trains will be operational.
