Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, an Indian government-owned integrated energy major announced on 31st July 2020 that its board had given green signal for implementation of an Integrated Para-Xylene (PX) and Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) complex. The complex shall be integrated with Paradip Refinery of Indian Oil situated in the state of Odisha. Estimated investment in the PX-PTA complex is Rs. 13,805 Cr and project is scheduled to be completed by early 2024.

About The Indian Oil Paradip PX-PTA Complex

Paraxylene (PX) is a colourless, flammable liquid. It is used as feedstock for the production of PTA. The complex shall have a production capacity of 8,00,000 tonnes per annum of PX.

Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is used as a raw material in manufacture of polyesters used in fibres, textiles, film used in packaging applications and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. The complex shall have 12,00,000 tonnes per annum of production capacity of PTA.

What PX-PTA Complex Shall Contribute at Pardip?

At Paradip Refinery, a Mono-Ethylene Glycol (MEG) production facility is under implementation which should be operational by the end of 2021. PTA will serve as raw material for production of MEG along with polyester.

PTA and MEG combined are the main feedstock for polyester manufacturing units. Availability of PTA and MEG at the refinery shall give a boost to polyester manufacturing in and around the area.

Shri SM Vaidya, Chairman, Indian Oil, said, “This plant, along with the upcoming MEG (Mono-Ethylene Glycol) plant at Paradip, would be a ready source of feedstock for Indian Oil’s upcoming textile yarn manufacturing project at Bhadrak in Odisha, and can similarly facilitate other textile and polyester projects in the region” as reported in the press release of Indian Oil dated 31st July 2020.

PX-PTA Completes Paradip Refinery of Indian Oil

Earlier in Feb 2019, Polypropylene (PP) plant of 6,80,000 tonnes per year capacity was commissioned. PP is used to manufacture commodity products like cement & fertiliser bags, packaging film etc.

With the PP facility, now announced PX and PTA production facility, and the under-implementation MEG facility, Paradip Refinery shall have a complete ecosystem of petrochemicals of global standards available under one roof.

On commissioning of PTA and MEG projects, the Petrochemical Intensity Index of Paradip Refinery will go up to 14.7 against the present level of 4.5.

This complete ecosystem will go a long way towards attracting investments in downstream industries and create further employment opportunities in the region.
