Indian Government Formulates Development Council for Cement Industry

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Govt. of India) via an order passed on 6th July 2021 has set up a 25-member development council for the Cement Industry named Development Council for Cement Industry (DCCI).

The newly formed DCCI will be chaired by Dalmia Bharat Group CMD Mr. Puneet Dalmia. Apart from major cement manufacturers, DCCI has members from various stakeholders of Cement industry like representatives of Cement manufacturers associations, cement labour associations, road and building research centers, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), labour commissioners of different states, member of Railway Board, real estate builders association etc.

According to the DPIIT order, main function of the Council is to suggest norms to eliminate waste, obtain maximum production, improve quality, reduce costs and promote standardization of products. Other functions of the council include recommending measures for securing full utilization of the installed capacity and for improving the working of Cement industry, particularly of the less efficient units.

A few months back, amid the high rising Cement prices after first Covid lockdown, there were demands for a regulatory authority for cement industry. Although, the newly formed DCCI doesn’t have any power for regulations but will definitely be helpful in bringing transparency to the working of Indian Cement industry.
