India to Develop First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Shipping Vessel
Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will be developing and constructing India’s first Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered vessel at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
The vessel shall use Low-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Technology (LT-PEM) for its Hydrogen Fuel Cell. This Fuel Cell Electric Vessel (FCEV) is estimated to cost Rs. 17.50 crore, of which 75% will be funded by the Union Government.
Cochin Shipyard Ltd. has partnered with Pune-headquartered KPIT Technologies Limited and other Indian developers to explore and work in the areas of Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. CSL will collaborate with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) to frame rules and regulations pertaining to such vessels.
