Hindalco Forays into EV Component Manufacturing, Receives Maiden Order
Hindalco Industries Ltd., part of the Aditya Birla Group, has forayed into Electric Vehicle (EV) component manufacturing with the inauguration of its new plant in Chakan, Pune. The company has also supplied 10,000 Aluminium battery enclosures to Mahindra for their electric SUVs from this new plant.
Hindalco’s Rs. 500 Cr. EV Component Manufacturing Plant in Pune
Hindalco Industries has supplied the aforementioned battery enclosures to Mahindra from its first EV component manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune. This plant has been built with an investment of Rs. 500 crore and covers an area of about 5 acre.
Currently, the company has a capacity of manufacturing 80,000 enclosures every year and this will be further increased to 1,60,000 units per annum. This plant will cater to the increasing demand for battery solutions. Hindalo Industries mentioned in its official press release dated 25th April 2025, “As of today, over 3,000 Mahindra EVs using these aluminium battery packs are already on Indian roads”.
Hindalo Industries’ newly opened plant is expected to generate about 1,000 job opportunities.
Commenting on this development, Mr. Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Ltd., said, “Our Chakan facility represents a strategic shift in India’s EV ecosystem from import dependence to high-performance, localised aluminium solutions”.
Aluminium Battery Enclosures for Mahindra’s Electric SUVs
Mahindra will use aluminium battery enclosures, supplied by Hindalco Industries, in its BE 6 and XUV 9e electric SUVs. These enclosures were developed together with Mahindra and are up to 40% lighter than traditional steel ones. As per Hindalo’s official release, these battery enclosures will help to improve the vehicle’s driving range by 8–10%, increases crash safety, and makes battery cooling more effective.
Commenting on this development, Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) said “Their [Hindalco Industries’] expertise in developing materials and strong engineering capabilities to offer new solutions have played a key role in developing efficient and sustainable battery enclosure solutions”.
