Gensol Emerges L1 Bidder for NHPC’s Green Hydrogen Refueling Station in Ladakh

Gensol Engineering Ltd., a solar energy company, has emerged as the lowest (L1) bidder for National Hydro Power Corp.’s (NHPC) tender to develop a Green Hydrogen Mobility station in Kargil, Ladakh.

Gensol, if selected for this project, will work in collaboration with Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd. (Matrix) to develop this Green Hydrogen mobility station. Gensol & Matrix are two separate companies which have common promoters.

Captive Solar Plant, Electrolysers to be Developed under NHPC’s Tender

If selected as the successful bidder, Gensol will be responsible for developing a 500 KW grid-connected, ground-mounted solar power project for providing energy to the upcoming Green Hydrogen refueling station.

Matrix will be responsible for EPC services pertaining to two electrolysers for Green Hydrogen generation. The capacity of each of these electrolysers will be 30 Normal Cubic Meter capacity. As specified by NHPC in its tender, the desired technologies for these electrolysers are alkaline, Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM), Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM), or Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell.

Balance of plant works including Green Hydrogen system installation, dispensing facilities, and storage facilities are also included in the scope of work of NHPC’s tender. The civil and electrical works for the same will also be fulfilled by the winning bidder.

Apart from this, the tender specifies Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services for this project by the successful bidder for a period of three years post-commissioning.

NHPC had floated this tender in June, 2023 with a specified project completion period of 12 months.

Project to Produce 40 Kg of 99.97% Pure Green Hydrogen Daily to Fuel Hydrogen Buses

NHPC’s tender calls for a daily production of about 40 Kg of 99.97% pure Green Hydrogen at the upcoming Kargil refueling station. This station will cater to the demand of two Hydrogen fuel cell buses which will ply in nearby areas.

Hydrogen buses have been gaining traction in Ladakh. In August 2023, NTPC started a 3-month long trial run of Hydrogen buses in Ladakh. In June 2022, Amara Raja Power Systems secured the contract from NTPC to develop a Green Hydrogen filling station for these buses at Leh, Ladakh.

NHPC’s Project to Strengthen Gensol’s Credibility – Company CEO

Commenting on Gensol’s L1 bidder position for the project, Mr. Ali Imran Naqvi, CEO of Gensol Engineering, said, “Our collaboration with a state-operated entity such as NHPC bolsters Gensol’s stature and trustworthiness in the industry, creating avenues for additional opportunities and alliances in the Green Hydrogen sector. The NHPC project win is set to strengthen Gensol’s market position, elevate our technical capabilities, and pave the way for growth and collaboration in the renewable energy sector”.

Mr. Chirag Kotecha, Whole-time Director at Matrix, said, “The forthcoming Green Hydrogen-based mobility station pilot project will establish the technical and commercial feasibility of green hydrogen. This initiative will pave the way for scaling up to larger projects and will contribute significantly to India’s energy security”.
