Envision Launches 5 MW Onshore Wind Turbine for Indian Market

Envision Energy India Pvt. Ltd., subsidiary of Shanghai-based Envision Energy, has launched its EN 182/5MW onshore Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) in India. This WTG model has a generation capacity of 5 MW, and it was unveiled at WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, which was held from 24th September to 27th September 2024.
Salient Features of Envision’s EN 182/5MW WTG
Envision’s EN 182/5MW wind turbine features a rotor diameter of 182 m, and a rated generation capacity of 5 MW. Envision’s new WTG will be deliverable from Q1 of FY-26.
As per Envision, the new EN 182/5MW WTG enhances annual energy output by more than 40% as compared to “…its current EN 156/3.3 MW platform, providing significant benefits for customers”. This increase in Annual Energy Output (AEP) has been attributed to EN 182/5MW’s “…larger swept area…enhanced turbine operational temperature till 50 Degree C ambient and 98 per cent machine uptime in high wind speeds”.
It must be noted that EN 156/3.3MW had been designed by Envision specifically for Indian wind conditions, and it is a widely used WTG model in projects commissioned by the company. In a July 2023 interview with T&D India, Envision Energy India’s MD, Mr. RPV Prasad explained, “This innovation [EN 156/3.3MW WTG] has enabled us to secure orders surpassing 4GW, resulting in a notable increase in our market share in India, which now stands at 45 percent”.
Commenting on the launch of EN 182/5MW, Mr. RPV Prasad, said, “[This] technological leap will transform…India’s wind energy regime and catapult us to deliver highly efficient and superior machines”. He added that this launch will play a crucial role for India to attain its net-zero goals.
India Still Dependent on Chinese Imports for WTGs
A July 2023 article by Mercom India quoted Mr. Santosh Khairnar, Head of Supply Chain Management, Inox Wind, as saying that India is dependent on China when it comes to wind energy supply chain. The article added that India relies ‘heavily’ on imports from China and Turkey, and that only 20% of the WTG gearbox equipment is produced locally.
It is interesting to note that Envision’s new 5 MW WTG for India has been launched just a little over a year after Adani Wind’s 5.2 MW rated WTG got enlisted in MNRE’s Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) in September 2023.
