Decommissioning Old Coal-Fired Power Plants May Save India 37,750 Crore
In a report published on 26th July 2021, the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water – Centre for Energy Finance (CEEW-CEF) said decommissioning Coal-based power plants that are more than 25 years old could lead to a potential savings of INR 37,750 Crore over the remaining life of these plants.
These savings would be generated through avoided annual capacity or fixed-charge payouts, primarily towards operation and maintenance costs.
The report further stated that out of India’s total installed capacity of around 300 GW, some 30 GW of Coal-based power plants are more than 25 years old and can be decommissioned on priority.
