Battery Offerings at REI Expo 2023: Innovative Solutions get Enthralling Response

Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2023 was held at the India Expo Centre, Greater Noida from 4th October to 6th October 2023. Several battery offerings were presented at the REI Expo 2023, as well as at the first edition of ‘The Battery Show’, which was REI Expo’s co-located event.

Log9 Launches MaxVal BESS at The Battery Show

Speaking to CableCommunity.com, Mr. Punith Kumar U, Vice President – Marketing & Growth at Log9, said that the company is launching MaxVal, its Battery Energy Storage solution (BESS) at The Battery Show.

MaxVal can be offered in two battery chemistries, namely LTO (Lithium-Titanium-Oxide) and LFP (Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate). While the former offers more battery cycles during its lifetime (about 15,000 cycles), the latter is more affordable despite offering a lower number of battery cycles (about 3,000 to 4,000 cycles).

Explaining about MaxVal, Mr. Praneeth Pillarisetti, Sr. Product Manager at Log9, said that the company’s BESS has different variants depending on the nature of application. For domestic BESS, Log9 has launched MaxVal 5000 and MaxVal 1200, which offer 4,800 Wh and 1,200 Wh of nominal energy in one discharge cycle. These products are modular in nature and can be scaled up as per requirements. For commercial establishments, MaxVal 5000 is scalable up to 80 KWh capacity.

For utility-scale establishments, Log9 offers MaxVal Mega, which is a containerised large-scale BESS solution. It has a minimum capacity of 250 KWh, which can be scaled up to 2.5 MWh.

Expressing himself at the event, Mr. Punith Kumar U said, “Log9 is one of the fastest growing EV battery companies in the past 3 years. We are leveraging our growth and technological know-how from our experience in EV batteries to enter the stationary Energy Storage System (ESS) business.”

WAAREE to Launch Laser-Welded EV Battery by December 2023

WAAREE ESS showcased a prototype of its laser-welded 51.2 V, 50 Ah battery for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers at The Battery Show. WAAREE ESS told CableCommunity.com that this battery is expected to be launched by December 2023. Currently, the cooling system for the battery, which employs a thermal gel, is under development.

Waaree’s Modular ESS Offering for Commercial & Utility-Scale Applications

Apart from this, WAAREE ESS presented its LFP-based (Lithium Ferrophosphate) BESS solutions for residential and utility-scale applications. The company showcased its 51.2 V, 100 Ah battery for residential applications, while LIGER & LION Series ESS was showcased for commercial & industrial applications. While LION supports requirements of less than 10 KWh battery energy storage, LIGER supports battery requirements greater than 10 KWh. LION and LIGER are modular in nature and therefore offer scalable capacity.

LION & LIGER are capable of supporting battery requirements of data centres and other industrial establishments, and BESS at Renewable Energy (RE) plants.

Invergy Showcases Graphene-based Battery for ESS Solutions

Noida-based Invergy India Pvt. Ltd., a power equipment manufacturer, showcased its graphene-based battery at the REI Expo 2023. This graphene-based battery, launched in 2023, makes use of capacitors and has a capacity of 10 KWh. The functioning temperature range of Invergy’s graphene-based battery is from 30 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, and it has a life of about 5 lakh battery cycles. Invergy told CableCommunity.com that although their graphene-based battery is significantly costlier (about 5 to 6 times the cost when compared to Lithium batteries), they are more cost-effective since they offer a longer lifetime when compared to the life of about 4,000 to 5,000 cycles offered by cheaper Lithium-based batteries.

Apart from their graphene-based battery, Invergy showcased its ES Series rack-mounted Lithium-based BESS solutions. These battery offerings range from 5 KWh to 10 KWh capacity and have a Depth of Discharge (DoD) of 90%.

Jakson Showcases its BESS Solution ‘EnerPack’ at REI 2023

Jakson Group, a manufacturer of Diesel Generator sets and an energy engineering company based in Noida, presented its BESS solution, EnerPack, for residential and commercial applications at the REI Expo 2023. This Lithium ion-based BESS can be scaled to support 3 KW to MW scale power requirements.

Speaking to CableCommunity.com, Mr. Ravindra Varshney, Sales Head (BESS & Hybrid) stressed the importance of the adoption of BESS at small-scale levels and in residential establishments.

Current Scenario of India’s BESS Requirements

As of June 2023, India has an installed BESS capacity of around 37 KWh. In light of India’s 2030 target of achieving 500 GW of installed Renewable Energy generation capacity, Hyderabad-based Mordor Intelligence estimates that the RE sector alone would need a BESS capacity of around 38 GWh by 2030. Recently, the Union Government announced a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for battery manufacturers. At REI Expo 2023, battery manufacturers unanimously welcomed the government’s VGF scheme. However, while speaking with CableCommunity.com at the expo, most battery manufacturers stressed the need for more incentives in order to encourage BESS production.
