Adani, Tata Power Slash Coal Imports as Prices Soar

India’s major private power producers Adani Power and Tata Power, which are also the biggest importers of coal in the country have drastically decreased their Coal imports, plunging India’s overall coal imports to the lowest levels in 6 years.

Adani imported 45% less and Tata Power 63% less Coal in July 2021 as compared to the same month’s Coal imports last year. The power generators are forced to do so because soaring international prices have made it unviable for them to produce electricity on purchase agreement rates with discoms.

Many Coal-fired power plants are facing the threat of halting operations as their Coal inventory is very low and also the domestic supply of Coal is already under stress.
