Foundation Stone Laid for Rs. 3,500 Cr. Defence Projects in West Bengal

The foundation stone for five defence projects worth a total of Rs. 3,500 crore has been laid in West Bengal, according to a PIB release issued by the Ministry of Defence on 23rd August 2026.

Out of the five projects, three are being developed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), while two are being developed by Yantra India Limited (YIL).

The three GRSE projects will expand the company’s shipbuilding and repair capacity. As part of the expansion, the company has signed lease agreements with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, for two small shipyards located on either bank of the Hooghly River. Additionally, the company has signed an agreement for a 32-acre riverside property at Raichak, a serene riverside town on the banks of the Hooghly River. These projects will be used for warship construction as well as the construction and repair of small and medium-sized commercial vessels.

Further, around Rs. 750 crore of the total investment will be allocated to two Yantra India projects. These projects will support domestic manufacturing of metallurgical and defence equipment and reduce dependence on imports. They will also cater to related requirements from the defence, railway and other strategic sectors.
