Supreme Power Equipment’s Tamil Nadu Transformer Plant Begins Production

Supreme Power Equipment Ltd (SPEL), a company engaged in the manufacturing and supply of oil-filled power and distribution transformers, has announced the commencement of commercial production at its new transformer manufacturing plant. The facility is located in Kannur Village of Thiruvallur District in Tamil Nadu. Supreme Power Equipment shared this update through its official stock filing.

Supreme Power’s Plant to Manufacture Transformers up to 200 MVA

The company’s newly commissioned plant in Tamil Nadu will manufacture transformers up to 200 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA), 220 KV class. The plant has been designed with an annual production capacity of 6,000 to 6,500 MVA.

Supreme Power Equipment invested about Rs. 100 crore in the development of this plant. The company had funded the project through a combination of Initial Public Offering (IPO) proceeds, internal accruals, and debt.

Explaining the rationale behind the expansion, Supreme Power Equipment stated in its filing that the new facility is expected to increase the company’s manufacturing bandwidth in power transformers, enable the execution of larger MVA contracts, and help meet growing market demand.

Supreme’s Overall Transformer Manufacturing Capacity Reaches 9,000 MVA

With the addition of the new transformer manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, Supreme Power Equipment’s total manufacturing capacity has increased to 9,000 MVA per year.

Alongside the new facility, the company also operates a manufacturing plant at SIDCO Industrial Estate in Thirumazhisai, Tamil Nadu. This facility is equipped to manufacture and test oil-filled power and distribution transformers up to 50 MVA and 132 KV class. The plant is spread across an area of 17,876 square metres.

Indian Transformer Market Continues to Expand

According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the Indian transformer market is expected to grow from USD 3 billion in 2025 to USD 3.25 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach USD 4.82 billion by 2031. This shows a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.22% during the period 2026–2031.

The growth of the Indian transformer market is driven by rapid grid modernization, increasing peak electricity demand, and government investments in power infrastructure.

Recent developments in the transformer manufacturing sector include Premier Energies’ entry into transformer manufacturing, the commissioning of a transformer manufacturing plant at Jarod in Vadodara district of Gujarat by Voltamp, and the development of a new transformer manufacturing plant by Siemens.
