NTPC & MAHAGENCO Acquire Non-Operational 1,350 MW Sinnar TPP

A consortium of NTPC Ltd. and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd. (MAHAGENCO) has completed the acquisition of Sinnar Thermal Power Ltd. (STPL). This acquisition is important for NTPC and Sinnar industrial region.

Sinnar Thermal Power Plant (TPP) is crucial as it comprises 5 thermal units, each with a capacity of 275 MW, i.e., a total capacity of 1,350 MW. Sinnar TPP, located in Sinnar industrial region near Nashik, has been non-operational for around 15 years. As this industrial region has pharmaceutical, textile, food-processing, and chemical plants, making this thermal power plant operational again will be integral to meeting this region’s electricity demands.

Speaking of STPL’s background, it was developed by Indiabulls Power and later became a subsidiary of RattanIndia Power. Sinnar TPP went into insolvency as it could not service its debts and meet operational payment obligations. The formal insolvency process for Sinnar TPP was initiated by an operational creditor, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co., in September 2022.

Now that the acquisition is completed, NTPC’s total installed capacity stands at 88,132 MW, and its commercial capacity stands at 87,052 MW.
