ABB India has inaugurated a new line for production of energy-efficient drives at its factory located in Peenya, about 12 Km away from Bengaluru. As per the company, this new production line will further ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and Make in India initiatives, which suggests that the increased drive production at the factory will cater to the domestic market, as well as potentially to exports.

Production at Bengaluru up by 25%, 40% Lower Lead Time Expected

With the inauguration of the aforementioned line, production capability of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) at ABB’s Bengaluru facility has increased by 25%. Mr. A.R Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India, explained that this move is targeted towards serving ABB’s customers with greater speed and reliability. As per the company, this new line will be instrumental enhancing delivery efficiency by reducing lead times by upto 40%. Moreover, this new line is capable of producing ‘made-to-order’ customised drives designed for specific applications.

Mr. Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion, added, “By building stronger local ecosystems, we are helping industries become more energy efficient while improving customer proximity”.

During ABB’s earnings call for Q2 of FY26, Mr. Sanjeev Sharma, ABB India’s Country MD, said that post CoVID, the company’s strategy is to focus on making its supply chains robust. For this, ABB is following a ‘local for local’ approach, thus focusing on localising production to a greater degree. Expansion of its Bengaluru facility is an example of this.

New Line Aligned with Industry 4.0 Standards

ABB’s new VSD production line is compliant with Industry 4.0 standards, and is equipped with sensor-based tools monitor. The line also makes use of robotics to automate movement of assembled drives. This minimises manual handling of the components, thereby enhancing safety in the production process.

ABB’s Rs. 140 Crore Investment Plan for Motors in India

In September 2025, ABB India had shared its plan to invest about Rs. 140 crore out of its internal accruals for enhancing LV motor production in India by about 23% by 2029. ABB’s motor segment also includes Variable Speed Drives, since they are used in conjunction with motors. This investment will be directed at the company’s motor manufacturing plants, one of which is the aforementioned Bengaluru factory, while the other is in Faridabad.

Therefore, it can be speculated that the aforementioned line has been added to the Bengaluru plant using a part of this investment.
