Adani Power Receives LoI to Develop 2,400 MW Thermal Power Project in Bihar

Adani Power Limited, one of India’s largest private-sector thermal power producers, has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL) to develop a 2,400 MW thermal power project at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. The project will be developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) basis.

Adani Power’s Investment to Drive Bihar’s Energy Infrastructure

Adani Power will be investing USD 3 billion (approximately Rs. 20,063.12 crore) for developing the aforementioned 2,400 MW thermal power project in Bihar. Commenting on this development, Mr. S.B. Khyalia, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Power, said, “We will set up a new greenfield plant…, which is expected to further aid industrialization in the state”.

The company will be responsible for developing the aforementioned thermal power project consisting of three units of 800 MW capacity each. The first unit is scheduled for commissioning within 48 months from the date of receiving the LoI.

Power Supply from Adani Power’s 2,400 MW Thermal Power Project

Once operational, the upcoming 2,400 MW thermal power plant will supply 2,274 MW of power to North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL). The generated power will be supplied at a tariff of Rs. 6.075 per KWh.

Mr. Khyalia commented, Our plant will be an advanced, low-emission Ultra-supercritical one, and will supply dependable, competitively priced, and high-quality power to the state”.

During construction phase, the project is expected to create 10,000 – 12,000 job opportunities. This plant will utilize coal allocated to Bihar under the SHAKTI Policy (Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India), which ensures transparent and efficient coal allocation for the power sector.

Adani Power’s Expanding Thermal Power Portfolio

Currently, Adani Power operates 17,510 MW of thermal power operational capacity across 11 plants in India. The company has power plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. Adani Power is also developing a thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh.

With the addition of the Bihar project and others Adani Power targets to expand its total power generation capacity to 30,670 MW by 2030, further strengthening its position in India’s power sector.
