Adani Energy Solutions Wins Rs. 25,000 Cr. HVDC Transmission Project

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) has secured a Letter of Intent (LoI) from REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd. This marks the company’s largest order win, according to several media reports.
Adani to Build HVDC Transmission System in Rajasthan REZ
In a filing dated 5th December 2024, Adani Energy Solutions mentioned that the company will establish this transmission system to facilitate power evacuation for Renewable Energy (RE) from Phase-III, Part-I of Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in Rajasthan (20 GW). AESL has won this project through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) in an auction conducted by REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd.
HVDC Terminals and Transmission Line between Rajashthan and UP
As per RECPDCL’s request for proposals, scope of work for AESL includes setting up a 6 GW terminal station in Bhadla. The company will also be responsible for setting up two 400/33 KV transformers of 50 MVA each for the station’s auxiliary power systems. Moreover, the company will also install two bus sectionalisers of 400 KV each at the Bhadla HVDC station.

Adani Energy Solutions will also set up a 6 GW terminal station at Fatehpur, UP. The Fatehpur HVDC station will have 5 Interconnecting Transformers (ICTs) of 1,500 MVA, to step down voltage from 765 KV to 400 KV. The company will also install 2 bus reactors of 330 MVAr at this station.
Additionally, the company will lay an 800 KV HVDC Hexa-Lapwing transmission line* between Bhadla and Fatehpur.
*Hexa-Lapwing transmission line is a type of line specifically for use in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission.
This project will be completed in a period of about 54 months ( 4 years and 6 months)
Other bidders for this project included Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), Sterlite Power, and Indigrid.
AESL’s First HVDC Project Under TBCB Route
The aforementioned project marks AESL’s first HVDC project won under the tariff based competitive bidding route, though the company has long been involved in HVDC-centric power transmission projects. In 2011, Adani Energy Solutions had commissioned India’s first private sector HVDC project, a 500KV HVDC link, running for 1,000 Km from Mundra in Gujarat, to Mohindergarh in Haryana, with a maximum transfer capacity of 2,500 MW.
Apart from the Rajasthan project, AESL is also currently working on two HVDC transmission lines in Mumbai, totaling 84 Circuit Kilometers (CKm). The company is investing over Rs. 2,000 crore in this initiative, with Rs. 1,700 crore being funded through debt.
