World’s Longest LPG Pipeline to be Commissioned in India by June 2025
Kandla-Gorakhpur Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipeline will be commissioned in India by June 2025. As per several media reports, this will be India’s longest LPG pipeline. This pipeline will be 2,800 Km long and will connect Kandla on the west coast to Gorakhpur in northern India.
IndiaOil-BPCL-HPCL JV to Jointly Lay Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline
IndianOil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (HPCL) will be jointly laying the Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline. This project will be developed at an estimated cost of USD 1.3 billion (approximately Rs. 11,228 crore).
During an interview, Mr. N. Senthil Kumar, Director of Pipelines at Indian Oil Corp., said, “This will be a game changer in the LPG supply chain. It’s like putting LPG on a conveyor belt”.
Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline to Meet 25% of India’s Demand
Once commissioned, the Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline will transport about 8.3 Million Tonnes (MT) of Liquefied Petroleum Gas every year, meeting about 25% of India’s total LPG demand. The first phase of Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline will be completed by the end of March 2025 and the pipeline will be fully functional by mid-2025.
However, any other details about the phases of the Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline remain undisclosed.
India currently has nearly 5,000 Km of LPG pipeline network, and the new Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline will be a major addition to the country’s fuel distribution infrastructure.
Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline to Cut Transportation Cost by 20%
India is the third-largest consumer of Liquefied Petroleum Gas in the world. The Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline is expected to reduce LPG transportation costs within the country by about 20%. Currently, about 70% of India’s LPG bottling plants depend on truck transportation for supply.
India’s Growing LPG Consumption
Over the past decade, LPG consumption in India has increased by 80%, reaching 29.6 Million Tonnes in FY-24. This growth is primarily driven by government subsidies that have enabled low-income households to transition from using polluting biomass to cleaner cooking fuel.
LPG consumption in India is expected to reach 42.5 MT by 2040.
