Vedanta Aluminium, the aluminium business division of Vedanta Limited, has scaled up the capacity of its Lanjigarh Alumina Refinery to 5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). The Lanjigarh refinery commenced operations as a 2 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) greenfield plant and initiated its phased capacity expansion programme in 2020.

The company has not publicly disclosed the total investment involved in the expansion of the Lanjigarh refinery.

Lanjigarh Emerges as One of the World’s Largest Alumina Refineries

According to Vedanta Limited’s press release, following the completion of this expansion, Lanjigarh refinery has emerged as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China. Furthermore, Lanjigarh refinery contributes nearly 38% of India’s total alumina output, making it the largest single-location alumina refinery in the country.

The refinery has also recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 Kilo Tonnes (KT) in November 2025. This reflects a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 68%, underscoring operational efficiency and a successful ramp-up following the expansion.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Aluminium is a strategic metal, central to India’s industrial growth and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Scaling our Lanjigarh operations to 5 MTPA is both a significant capacity milestone and a critical step toward building a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain in India.”

Vedanta’s Investment Plans in India’s Aluminium Sector

Apart from the capacity expansion at Lanjigarh, Vedanta Group is undertaking other large-scale investments in India’s aluminium sector. Earlier in October 2025, Vedanta Group announced an investment of Rs. 1 lakh crore in Odisha. This investment will be utilised for setting up an alumina refinery and an aluminium smelter near Kamakhyanagar in the Dhenkanal district of the state.

Notably, the announced Rs. 1 lakh crore investment will be in addition to Vedanta’s earlier commitment of Rs. 1 lakh crore for developing an alumina refinery and aluminium smelter in Rayagada district of Odisha.

Rising Aluminium Demand Driving Capacity Expansion in India

The aforementioned aluminium projects are expected to cater to the rapidly rising domestic demand for aluminium in India. The country’s aluminium demand is witnessing strong growth and is projected to nearly double by 2033, driven by large-scale infrastructure development such as railways, housing, renewable energy projects, increasing urbanisation, and the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.

India’s aluminium demand is projected to reach around 9 Million Tonnes by 2033, up from approximately 4.9–5 Million Tonnes (MT) in FY24.
