Tata Steel Signs Joint Research Agreement with NIT Rourkela

Tata Steel Limited has signed a joint research agreement with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, Odisha, to explore the use of hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) multiscale composites. The information was shared by Dr. Bankim Chandra Ray, Professor at NIT Rourkela, via his LinkedIn post dated March 5, 2024.

As per this agreement, Tata Steel and NIT Rourkela will collaborate on researching the application of FRP composites as structural materials for Type IV and Type V* Hydrogen storage tanks. Hydrogen’s low density and flammability makes its transportation challenging. The target of Tata Steel and NIT’s joint research is to explore innovations in the design of Hydrogen storage tanks.

*Type IV Hydrogen storage tanks are pressurized vessels with an inner bladder whereas Type V Hydrogen storage tanks are linerless vessels without an inner bladder.
