Tata Steel to Invest ₹40,000 Cr for Capacity Expansion
Tata Steel Limited, the Indian steel giant, will invest Rs. 40,000 crore to expand manufacturing capacity of its subsidiary, Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL), which is located in Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur district of Odisha. This announcement was made by Mr. T. V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, during his interaction on sidelines of the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM) Symposium.
Expansion to Cover Upstream & Downstream Facilities
Neelachal Ispat currently has a steel manufacturing capacity of 1.1 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA), which will be increased to 6 MMTPA.
This capacity augmentation marks the first phase of Tata Steel’s long-term expansion plan for this facility. The ₹40,000 crore investment is allocated for Phase 1 of the development. However, no further details are available regarding Phase 2, apart from that Neelachal Ispat Nigam’s capacity will be further expanded to 9.5 MMTPA during this phase.
In Ph-1 of the development, expansion will cover both upstream and downstream manufacturing facilities at NINL.
Upstream facilities* developed under this expansion will include a blast furnace, a steel melting shop, pellet plants, and raw material handling systems. These facilities will support processing of iron ore and other raw materials to produce molten iron, which will then be refined into crude steel. Further, on the downstream** side, expansion will include rebar mills, wire rod mills, and structural section mills.
Neelanchal Ispat: From Financial Crisis to Tata Steel Acquisition
NINL was established in 1982. The plant commenced commercial production in 2002 but faced financial losses over the next several years. The company eventually ran out of funds, and this situation led to a complete shutdown in March 2020.
To revive the plant, the government initiated disinvestment in NINL. Later in 2022, Tata Steel emerged as the successful bidder and acquired NINL for Rs. 12,100 crore. This Acquisition of Neelachal Ispat provided Tata Steel with an opportunity to expand its steel manufacturing without establishing a new plant.
Benefits of Acquiring Neelachal Ispat for Tata Steel
NINL is located close to Tata Steel’s existing Kalinganagar plant and occupies around 2,500 acres of land, providing space for future expansions. Proximity of the two plants also offers opportunities to share existing infrastructure, including rail links, roads, power supply, and water systems. This helps Tata Steel make more efficient use of its existing infrastructure as it expands NINL’s production capacity.
This acquisition also provided Tata Steel access to iron ore mines with total reserves of around 100 million tonnes, strengthening its raw material supply chain and its long-term steel production plans.
