Tata Steel First in India to Produce Steel Pipes to Transport Hydrogen

Tata Steel Ltd. has become the first Steel company in India to develop and produce pipes specifically designed to transport Hydrogen.

Tata Steel has manufactured these Hydrogen transport pipes from API X65 Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) grade of Steel at its Khopoli plant in Maharashtra. Steel used for these pipes was in turn produced at Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant. These pipes are capable of transporting Hydrogen at high pressures of up to 100 bar.

Commenting on this development, Mr. Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing & Sales (Flat Products), Tata Steel, said “The successful testing of the new ERW [Electric Resistance Welded] pipes demonstrates our capabilities to deliver critical physical infrastructure for the energy sector, domestically”.

This development will be instrumental in supporting Indian Government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets to produce 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of Green Hydrogen every year by 2030. One of the biggest challenges in developing Green Hydrogen infrastructure is transportation of Hydrogen. These pipes, manufactured by Tata Steel, are anticipated to play a crucial role in developing Green Hydrogen transport infrastructure in India.
