Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited has inaugurated India’s first multi-purpose Green Hydrogen project at 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh. This information was shared by SJVN in its press release dated 24th April 2024.

SJVN’s Project to Generate 14 Kg of Green Hydrogen per Day

Green Hydrogen (GH2) at SJVN’s project will be produced using an alkaline electrolyzer with a capacity of 20 Nm3/hour. The project is expected to generate about 14 Kg of Green Hydrogen per day, considering 8 hours of daily operation. The produced GH2 will be stored in 6 storage tanks, which together will have a total capacity of 12 cubic metre. Green Hydrogen in these tanks will be stored at a pressure of 30 bar.

This pilot project will utilize Renewable Energy (RE) generated from SJVN’s 1.31 MW solar power plant at Wadhal, Himachal Pradesh for producing GH2.

Multi-Purpose Green Hydrogen Project: HVOF Coating and Electricity Generation

SJVN’s Green project will provide Hydrogen fuel for High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF)* coating facility of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station. The Green Hydrogen produced will be utilized for HVOF coating of underwater parts of turbines at Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station.

*High Velocity Oxygen Fuel coating is a process in which fuel and oxygen are fed into a combustion chamber and ignited, following which the heat thus generated is applied along with a coating chemical onto the surface to be coated. The coating chemical is usually in powdered form.

Apart from this, Green Hydrogen from SJVN’s project will be used to generate electricity using a 25 KW Hydrogen fuel cell**. Referring to the fact that Green Hydrogen from this pilot project will be used for two different purposes, SJVN mentioned in it’s X (Twitter) post dated 24th April 2024 that this project has ‘combined heat & power’ applications.

**A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy from a fuel, such as Hydrogen, into electricity.

SJVN Green Hydrogen Project Aligned with National Green Hydrogen Mission – SJVN CMD

The inauguration of SJVN’s Green Hydrogen project in Himachal Pradesh aligns with Government of India’s (GoI) National Green Hydrogen Mission. This mission targets to produce about 5 Million Metric Tonne Per Annum (MMTPA) of Green Hydrogen every year by 2030.

Commenting on this inauguration, Ms. Geeta Kapur, Chairman & Managing Director of SJVN, said, “Aligned with National Green Hydrogen Mission of Government of India, SJVN’s Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is poised to accelerate the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in power sector, establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source”.

About SJVN Limited: SJVN Limited, founded in 1988, is a Mini Ratna Company under Ministry of Power, Govt. of India. It is a Joint Venture (JV) of the Government of India (GoI) and the Government of Himachal Pradesh (GoHP).
