Samsung Electronics’ Subsidiary to Invest Rs. 345 Cr. for Pune Plant Expansion
HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics since 2017, has announced an investment of Rs. 345 crore (approximately USD 42 million) to expand its manufacturing plant at Chakan in Pune, Maharashtra. HARMAN’s Pune plant manufactures automotive components, including car cockpits, telematics units*, and car audio systems.
*Telematic Units are used to transmit vehicle data over the internet such as location, fuel efficiency and engine status wirelessly. This data is used for car fleet management, tracking, etc.
Out of the total Rs. 345 crore investment, HARMAN will allocate Rs. 45 crore (USD 5.5 million) for its immediate expansion phase. The remaining Rs. 300 crore (USD 36.5 million) will be invested over the next three years. As per the company, once the entire expansion is complete, about 300 new jobs will be created by HARMAN in Pune.
As part of the expansion plan, HARMAN will add four new Surface Mount Technology (SMT) lines and introduce new manufacturing capabilities such as module production and speaker assembly. The project will increase the plant’s manufacturing capacity by 50% and add 71,505 sq. ft. of built-up area, which will include a 45,000 sq. ft. production shop floor.
Upon completion in 2027, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 4 million car audio components, 1.4 million infotainment units, and 0.8 million Telematics Control Units (TCUs).
HARMAN caters to major car players in the Indian market such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra. The company also caters to overseas car manufacturers in North America and Europe.
