Over Rs 11,000 Cr Hydropower Projects Launched in Himachal Pradesh

Hydropower projects worth over Rs 11,000 crore were launched at Himachal Pradesh Global Investors Meet held in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. These Hydropower projects will boost Himachal Pradesh economy and provide additional power to the state.

Also, these projects are in line with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.

Indian PM laid the foundation stone for Luhri Stage 1 Hydropower project, Dhaulasidh Hydropower project and Renukaji Dam project in Himachal Pradesh at the global investor meet. He also inaugurated the Sawra-Kuddu hydropower project.

Foundation Stone Laid for 3 Hydropower Projects in Himachal Pradesh

Luhri Stage 1 Hydropower project is located near Nirath Village, Distt. Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. It will be a 210 MW project and will be built at a cost of over ₹ 1,800 crore. It will lead to the generation of over 750 million units of electricity per year.

The Luhri project will have a Dam-toe-power house with dam height 80 meter and the power house shall have four units (2×80 MW=160 MW + 2×25 MW=50 MW). This project is being implemented by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL).

Dhaulasidh Hydropower project, will be a run-of-the-river power project located in Dhaulasidh, Distt. Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh and it will be the first hydropower project of Hamirpur district. The 66 MW project will be built at a cost of over ₹ 680 crore. It will lead to the generation of over 300 million units of electricity per year.

Dhaulasidh Hydro Power Project shall have a Dam-toe-power house with dam height 70 meter and surface power house with two units of 33 MW each. This project is also being developed by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL).

Renukaji Dam project, has been conceived on Giri river, (tributary of river Yamuna) in Sirmour District of Himachal Pradesh. Earlier in December 2019, the Ministry of Jal Shakti had accepted the detailed project report (DPR) for the project. Renukaji dam project is a part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). It will be a 40 MW storage project and will be built at a cost of around ₹ 7,000 crore. The project, once completed, is likely to generate 200 million units of energy. It shall have a surface power house and a dam with 148 meter height.

The Renukaji project will supply water to Delhi and other states. Construction for the Renukaji dam will begin in December 2022 and the project is likely to be completed in six years.

Sawra-Kuddu Hydropower project Inaugurated in Himachal Pradesh

Sawra-Kuddu Hydropower Project, a 111 MW project has been built at a cost of around ₹ 2,080 crore. This power project will lead to generation of over 380 million units of electricity per year and help Himachal Pradesh earn revenue worth over ₹ 120 crore annually.

The state company, Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) had created a Special Purpose Vehicle – Pabbar Valley Power Corporation for execution of this project. Andritz Hydro had supplied 3 units of francis turbines, each with 37 MW nameplate capacity for the Sawra-Kuddu Hydropower Project.
