NHPC Approves Rs. 5,702 Cr. Investment for 2 Hydro Electric Projects in J&K

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd. has recently approved Rs. 5,702.91 crore investment for two hydroelectric projects. These two projects are Uri-I Stage-II hydroelectric project and Dulhasti Stage-II hydroelectric project in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).

Uri-I Stage-II Hydro Electric Project Details

Uri-I Stage-II hydroelectric project will have a capacity of 240 MW, this capacity will be added to the already existing Uri hydroelectric project on Jhelum River in Baramulla district of J&K. The approved investment for this Stage-II project is estimated at Rs. 2,708.95 crore.

This investment accounts for the interest that will be accumulated during construction, which is Rs. 264.31 crore, and also includes a grant of Rs. 26.20 crore to enable infrastructure. Further, the project is expected to start from 1st March 2026, subject to signing of implementation agreement between NHPC and Government of J&K, and other required approvals.

Dulhasti Stage-II Hydro Electric Project Details

Dulhasti Stage-II hydroelectric project will have a capacity of 260 MW, this project will be an extension of Dulhasti Stage-I project on the Chenab River in the Kishtwar district of J&K. The investment for this Stage- II project is estimated at Rs. 2,993.96 crore.

This approved investment accounts for the interest that will accumulate during construction i.e., Rs. 289.06 crore, and also includes a grant of Rs. 245 crore meant to enable infrastructure. This project is expected to start from 1st March 2026, subject to signing of implementation agreement between NHPC and Government of J&K, and other required approvals.

NHPC’s to Start Other Hydro Projects in FY27

During the company’s earnings call for Q3 FY26 financials, Mr. Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director (MD), NHPC, addressed the upcoming hydro power projects. He noted that the company has new hydro projects that are going to start very soon. In addition to the aforesaid projects, he mentioned Sawalkot (1,856 MW), Subansiri Upper (1,605 MW), Etalin (3,097 MW), and Kamala (1,720 MW). Where Etalin is set to be India’s largest hydroelectric project.

Speaking on these projects’ current status, Mr. Gupta said, “These are at the different stages of clearances and approvals ….. Some of them will be commenced in the 1st quarter of FY’27, while others may begin in 2nd and 3rd quarter of FY’27. In total, we are planning to start 5-6 projects this year itself, comprising around 10,000 MW of capacity.”
