NGEL and Assago Sign MoU to Develop India’s First Green Urea Plant in Andhra

NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL) and Assago Industries Pvt. Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop India’s first large-scale Green Urea production ecosystem. This ecosystem will be built within NGEL’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh.

As per the MoU, NGEL will supply Assago with Green Ammonia, CO₂, Renewable Energy (RE), and other associated utilities, which will enable the production of Green Urea using renewable feedstock.

This initiative is a step to support India’s transition towards sustainable fertilizer production while also contributing to the nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. Currently, India’s consumption of urea is around 35 to 40 million tonnes annually, and to fulfill this demand, 8 to 10 million tonnes of urea is imported every year.

While conventional urea production in India had hit a record high in 2023-2024, exceeding 314 lakh metric tonnes, Green Urea is still in the adoption phase. With NGEL’s and Assago’s collaboration, nation’s import dependence will be curbed, all the while promoting indigenous production of Green Urea.
